Synopsis

The full name of this project is “The project-based language learning method — construction project for the online database of learning materials,” an approved project of “2020 Shanghai Sanda University undergraduate innovative and entrepreneurial training project.” Team members are all students majoring in International Economics and Trade from Shengxiang Business School.

Globalization is a big trend nowadays, as the most widely spoken language3), English has a particular significance in the education of Chinese higher schools. It is a continuous topic for discussion on how to improve the quality of English teaching and creat and interest in what students learn.

Project-based language learning (PBL) is a student-centered pedagogy that organizes learning around projects. So, what must a project have in order to be considered an instance of PBL? According to John W. Thomas's (2000) review of references4),

1. PBL projects are central, not peripheral to the curriculum.
2. PBL projects are focused on questions or problems that “drive” students to encounter (and struggle with) the central concepts and principles of a discipline.
3. (PBL) Projects involve students in a constructive investigation.
4. (PBL) Projects are student-driven to some significant degree.
5. (PBL) Projects are realistic, not school-like.
